About Sutton

Creating art has always been a very personal and intense experience for me. It allows me to explore my ideas through many different media, many different techniques. Teaching art has brought me the experience of sharing these ideas and techniques with my students, and in return, them sharing their own ideas with each other and me.

Currently, my main interests that I have been exploring within my own art center around otherworldly imagery, nature, and female figures. Tile murals have become my current favorite art medium. The brilliant colors and textures that are possible when working with low-fire glazes excite me. They are a perfect fit to create the dreamy, fantasy-like, and sometimes disturbing images that occupy my mind. One of my favorite things about working with low-fire glazes is the somewhat unpredictable nature of what can happen in the firing process. There is a good deal of serendipity that occurs when things come out right, and I enjoy those surprises.

As my attention is easily distracted with new ideas, I have been exploring many other mediums along with my tile work. The Book Arts Program up at the University of Utah has been offering opportunities for teachers to participate in workshops, and I’ve really enjoyed going to these over the past few summers.  Watercolor is something that I thoroughly enjoy experimenting with as well. I also do the occasional pen & ink, linoleum cut, and copper rubbing. I am, and probably always will be, very much in love with the different processes involved in creating art.

I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Utah. I credit my high school art teachers, Bill Larsen and John Fackrell, with imbuing a true love and understanding of art within me. Without their skill and love for art, I don’t know that I would have followed this path in life. Evergreen Junior High has been the place where I try to pass on my own love of art to my students since 1998. With luck, a few of them will find their passion in art as well.

Welcome to my artist website.  I hope you take some time to look at my portfolio to see some of my work.  New, and old, work will continue to be added as things get moving more on my website.  Enjoy!
